Mental illness is the second leading cause of death for children aged 10-19. The number of youth being admitted to the McMaster Children's Hospital after a suicide attempt has tripled since 2020. Admissions for substance use disorders have doubled since the start of the pandemic. Referrals to the hospital's eating disorder program have increased by an alarming 90 per cent since spring 2020. During uncertain times, anxiety can be overwhelming, pushing young people to grasp for any bit of control they can find.
McMaster Children's Hospital Foundation is committed to helping children and youth who are struggling with mental illness by funding the programs, spaces and research needed to make a vital difference for patients and their families. McMaster Children's Hospital including Ron Joyce Children's Health Centre operate the largest child & youth mental health program in Canada, including both an inpatient and outpatient program. Proudly serving families througout south-central Ontario stretching from Burlington to Kitchener-Waterloo, Niagara to Guelph: McMaster Children's Hospital provides a range of acute and outpatient care during nearly 240,000 patient visits last year.
