You can help kids in hospital just be kids.

Being a kid can be tough. Being a kid in hospital can be even tougher. Programs like Child Life bring joy and distraction, and make a hospital stay a little more comfortable for the 130,000 kids who need HSC Winnipeg Children’s Hospital each year.

Through play, kids interact with and learn from the world around them. For kids in hospital, engaging in therapeutic play with a trained professional can guide them to a sense of normalcy and control, and helps with quicker recovery. And learning about and preparing for a medical procedure can significantly reduce fears and anxiety. Engaging in “normal activities” like creating art, playing video games, reading books and making music is proven to help children deal with their emotions.

Child Life is especially beneficial for kids who come from rural and remote communities – approximately 45 percent of kids who need the hospital – because in addition to the normal stresses of hospitalization they may face cultural shock and heightened separation issues as they are far from family, friends, school, and routines.

You can help kids like Brady.

At 5 months old, Brady’s parents noticed unusual spots on his body. Doctors discovered he has Type 1 Neurofibromatosis - a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. These tumors can develop anywhere in the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord and nerves.

At age six, Brady’s Neurofibromitosis caused a tumour on his spine so large, it made Brady’s spine to bend, much like a tree with branches on one side being too heavy. By age nine he needed surgery on his spine.

Brady has now had three spinal surgeries to implant rods into his back to keep his spine straighter. He goes to HSC Children’s Hospital for an MRI every six months.

Despite the rods in his back and the major surgeries he has had, now 15-year-old Brady is perseverant and doesn’t let anything stand in his way. He loves to play hockey and baseball, and he hunts and fishes with his dad.

You can help kids like Brady by supporting Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. Learn more about Brady’s story at goodbear.ca/Brady.
