Aiden's Story

Some of you may know that our son Aiden McHugh was born quite sick on June 12, 2016.  I did not feel Aiden move that morning so we decided to go to the PLC hospital to just check it out.  They hooked up the monitor and we saw a heartbeat, which we thought everything is fine and we would be able to continue our day as any other normal day.  But as time passed, more nurses, and more doctors came in to check on me, and that's when we started to get nervous and wondered if something was wrong.  And ofcourse our suspicions were correct, and this is where Aiden's story began when the Doctor said, "We need to do an emergency c-section".

As the Doctor was performing the c-section, we hear him say, "The cord is wrapped around his neck twice".  They got Aiden out, but I did not hear any cries, and my heart dropped, and tried not to panic while they were sewing me back up. They found Aiden had low blood pressure, low blood sugar, pulmonary hypertension, among other things.  They put in a breathing tube, and rushed him into the NICU floor to stabilize him and was then immediately transferred to the NICU at the Alberta Children's Hospital.  While he was there he was placed into hypothermia, and hooked up to machines to monitor seizure activity. They worked tirelessly to make him better. There were several complications that were found during his stay, including enlarged veins in his brain, a blood clot in his brain, and cysts, blocking the tear duct.  He got better day by day, and nearly 2 months after in the NICU we were finally able to take him home. He needed to be fed through a feeding tube through the nose, as well as take medications every day to prevent seizures, given shots to break up the blood clot in his brain, and eye drops for the surgery he had to remove the cyst. All of this resulted in Aiden having a hypoxic brain injury, and a very mild form of cerebral palsy.

Aiden had a rough start to life, we continue to be followed at the neonatal clinic, hematology clinic, neuro clinic, hearing clinic, vision clinic, and physio at ACH, but now Aiden is a very energetic, happy boy, who loves to play, laugh, sing, and dance.  The Alberta Children's Hospital was Aiden's home for the first 2 months of his life, and it will always hold a special place in my heart, and we are forever grateful to all the doctors and nurses who saved Aiden.

I’ll be running and walking on September 11th, 2022 in the RBC Race for the Kids at Heritage Park.  I’m hoping you will show your support by making a donation to my fundraising page or joining the RBC DS Calgary North Team. Together, we can make such a difference for kids who need help. I will keep you updated on my fundraising progress and if you're inspired by my efforts, please register and join me!
